Abingdon Air & Country Show
2nd May 2010

As arranged Tony F and I met up at Magor Services, though he was late again, and with the rain lashing down headed for Dalton Barracks.
Originally the airfield was called RAF Abingdon which opened in 1932, and closed due to defence cuts in 1992. The airfield played vital roles in the Berlin Airlift in 1948/49 and later in the first Gulf War in 1991. The name “Dalton” came from a famous soldier, James Langley Dalton VC who fought in the Battle of Rorkes Drift during the 1879 Zulu Wars.
Once on site we waited for the rain to calm down before exploring the large display of static aircraft, the MG Abingdon display, various other car clubs and stalls. A few pitches were empty this year due to the poor weather conditions but they should have been there as the rain gave way to a brighter afternoon with crowds of visitors and a very impressive classic vehicle display. The Air Show was amazing considering the weather conditions in which they
flew. We didn’t see Dr Who this year but he was kind enough to let us look at his Tardis.
Despite the weather at the start of the day, in my humble opinion it was a great show with good company. |
