The meeting time and place was for 0930hrs departure from Magor Services. I picked up Darren to give him a taste of open top driving and to “rough” it in my Herald away from the usual comfort and warmth of his Granada. On our way to Magor the poor lad looked uncomfortable and squashed, grabbing at the door handle on every bend in fear of landing in my lap.
We arrive too early so decided to have a cuppa whilst waiting for Tony F and Chris. 0925hrs came as did a call from Tony stating that he was 10 minutes away. 20 minutes later they arrived and after deciding that Tony was to lead with sat navs set we headed off. En route Darren seemed to settle in having found a comfort zone and started to look relaxed. It was a
pleasant change to have his company, but boy, can he talk. I swear that he did not take a breath the whole journey.
Nearing our destination, according to the sat nav, we came to a dead end and once again found a local who pointed us in the right direction. One street was closed to traffic due to preparations for Remembrance Sunday.
Please spare a thought again in remembering all those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and all conflicts since, and to the men and women of Her Majesty’s Forces who are still dying and being injured.
On arrival at the show ground we paid our entrance fees and parked up in the exhibition area. We entered one building and it was an auto jumbler’s dream, with row upon row of new and used parts. Realising the size of the place we decided to split up and meet later for a bite to eat. In one of the halls there were quite a few vehicles, some concourse level and others, MG’s and Triumphs, in
the restoration process. There were two fine examples of VW camper vans and a cracking Mini. The speaker for the Southern Area, TSSC stand, Derek Giles, had on display a GT6 under restoration and his own car, a restored Triumph Herald. He was busy the majority of the day taking time to address questions from myself and other visitors.
As arranged earlier we met up at the burger van for coffee, hot dogs, chips and steak rolls. Wined and dined we again parted company to pick up any last bits and pieces. Having bought our goods we again met for a coffee, showing each other our new toys. With the late afternoon air rapidly cooling down, we set off home with hoods up and heaters on.
Did I manage to convert Darren to a convertible? I don’t think so; he enjoys the comfort and luxury of his Granada too much.
With thanks to Tony, Chris and Darren for making the day as it was.
