Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway Company Transport Rally

24th August 2008

Each year we have been to this show we have watched it grow and this year was no exception. Nine cars met at the Harvester in Pontypool for the short journey to the show in Blaenavon and we arrived at about ten O’clock.

As usual there was free tea and coffee laid on for the exhibitors, which was our first stop on arrival. There were very many more cars this year and we were parked on grass, which is always better. The auto jumble was held in a big marquee, which also acted as a beer tent.

For most of the day it was sunny and when it did rain most of us were in the coffee shop so we never got wet. A BBQ was going on near the model railway which was giving free rides for the children. We put the chairs up behind our row of cars, but we hardly sat on them as it was soon time for our free ride on the diesel train to the whistle stop pub for lunch. Twenty of us took the train to the pub and were duly shown to our seats. The children went outside to the park and played on the swings and other equipment until the meal arrived.

Phil ordered a large mixed grill but for a change he flagged because the meal was huge. The meal took a time coming but was worth waiting for and everybody was stuffed by the time it was finished. Brian with the Ford Popular ordered four slices of bread with his meal uncut, but when it came each slice on a different plate they were like a loaf on their own and everybody laughed at him.

We went back on the train and back to the coffee shop, then after coffee we all went for a sit down near the cars. The boys during the day took the mick out of the cars and this time it was Richard's turn as a jubilee clip was facing the wrong way and was touching the inside of his bonnet making a mark. This he soon changed. Lester came out with his favorite jokes and we tried to laugh but it was hard. Soon it was time to go so we collected our plaques and headed for home
