19 turned up for lunch at the Old Ferry Pub at Beachley. Situated next door to the pub is the slipway for the old ferry boats (the only car crossing in the 1960’s otherwise you would have to go around Gloucester).
Just as well everybody knew where it was, as Phil beat us there - you all know why – something to with his new pistons I think. The view over the river Severn was misty but on a sunny day what a view it would make. Phil said the landlord invited us to us their barbecue facilities that would be great for the summer.
It was Beryl’s birthday and a surprise birthday cake was brought in with candles and she managed to blow them all out. Amongst many pressies was a very large wine glass, I reckon big enough to take a one bottle of liquid refreshment.
After a delicious lunch with desserts a-plenty such as Horny Devil, Apple crumble, cheese & biscuits etc. Again we had a slight misunderstanding with the bill for the meal but it appears they had not added it up correctly so the £1’s we had back were retrieved quickly to pay the difference.
After Lunch we were invited to Beryl’s & Francis for the cutting of the cake. The men gathered around Francis’ MG discussing what men discuss and the women were in the kitchen having an intelligent conversation. The men finally arrived at the table and Lora cut the chocolate cake into an accurate 19 pieces, which was divulged in seconds with a nice cup of coffee. The day was soon over and Beryl said “it was the best Birthday ever” and we all agreed.
