GWENT MG OWNERS CLUB

 Report

Wheelnuts Classic Car Show at
St. Rose's School, Stroud

29th April 2007

The day started cold with rain in the air. We left Hurrans garden centre earlier than we wanted to, one car down as Philip broke down on the roundabout leading to Cwmbran and had to call the RAC to tow him home. It was 8.35am before the nine cars left on the way to Stroud .The journey went without incident, even with the MG YB overtaking a row of Triumph Stags on the M4, no wrong turns and no twice round roundabouts.

Getting onto site took a fair time but as we were early that did not matter. We lined up in our own unique way and soon had our new flag poles and bunting set out. The weather soon brightened up into a very warm day and we were ready for the influx of public keen to ask questions about the cars, even offering to buy Francis's car, but as he was there I could not sell it.

It was a long time before anybody noticed that the MG flag was upside down. Some said that it was a mark of respect for Phil's car that had been towed away, others said it was because Tony and Angela had just come back from Oz, but to be truthful its because I am dull as I put it up. Things don't change - one couple forgot their water and another forgot his kettle, but we all shared and tea and coffee was flowing. The bacon sandwiches that we were given were welcome. Most had them before the kettles had boiled.

The children went into a roped off area for lessons on how to do circus tricks like juggle and ride unicycles. There was an auto jumble, book stalls and much more. Two members fell asleep in the heat of the sun while others sat round for a natter but we all walked round to look at some of the amazing cars that were there. The one I liked was a 1957 Ford Popular as most of the people there could remember somebody who had one.

As the day was coming to a close we were told to go to the front of the School where the prizes were being given out and to our delight we won best club stand of 2007. We were presented with a trophy cup. This was amazing as we had not been there before and there were 31 club stands to choose from. Katie won one of the raffle prizes so everybody felt a little proud and very pleased. Back at the cars our secretary said a small speech to congratulate all the members who contribute to us being such a happy team of individuals.

The journey home was a little different with us taking the wrong road and having to turn back going round the roundabout twice and splitting up. Yes, things are back to normal. I am also please to say that Phil fixed his car with only a spanner as it was a loose valve adjuster nut and nothing more serious.
