Clearwell Caves Road Run

7th October 2007

More Pictures

22 members left the lay-by at Hurrans at approx. 9.30 a.m, picking up Beryl & Francis on the way.  Red Baron led the way at rather a steady pace, befitting to his nickname.

Unfortunately Richard got stuck behind a Landrover and missed the turning.  Truth has it that Lori wanted to do some shopping in Monmouth.  By the time Lori & Richard arrived we all had our cuppas in the café and it was then time for our underground adventure. Red Baron tried to negotiate a special rate for the group but it was a no no.  “Luv him he did try”.  It was quite dark and some of us were a bit apprehensive in the dark, but not to worry - we had Phil.  Beryl was learning all about the difference between Mangols and Mandrills from Phil…  As you know Phil is very experienced in this field.   Tina was finding that she had worn the wrong shoes, and Vanessa was very accurately dripped in the eye from the roof above, by passing her specs – what a shot.   Katy asked if the cave would come down in a 1,000 years - hoping it wouldn’t happen yet I suppose - ‘Kids logic’ There were lots of small pools and even an old oven range for boiling the kettle.   The cave was a bit neglected  I felt and poorly lit – you could just a about see the quartz glistening.  At the end of the tunnel was gift shop with stones, trinkets and gifts for sale and smelling of carbolic soap I think.

Time for another cuppa before leaving for Tintern Parva and the Anchor Inn for Lunch.  When we arrived at the Anchor there was a Classic car meet which apparently happens there the first Sunday of every month. After having a quick look around the gift shop and the classic cars that were left, mainly Triumph Stags, we made our way home.
