Abergavenny Steam Rally

27th-28th May 2007

Sunday 27th

We met at the Harvester in Pontypool at 9.30am. The forecast was rain and when we left it was true to its word. Four cars turned out for the day and we arrived at the Baily park site early.

We parked up, had a quick chat and a stroll around the stalls. Francis brought some drills, Phil brought a throw over for Lucy's bed and we waited in the rain. I stood under a canvas over a stall, but the wind blew and a torrent of rain water poured off the top all over me. The stall holders were moaning about the weather and the lost of trade; biggest sale was the umbrella stall. The rain got heavier Francis and Beryl stayed in the car and watched. Keith and Sandra sat in the car wiping the condensation off the windows, although there was nothing to see but the rain. I was surprised that there was anybody walking around but some braved the weather and came for a chat.

We could not wait till the time when we could go home. On the way home Keith found a part of the road that had swelled with the rain and burst a water pipe. He hit it rather hard but was ok. Just after that they closed the road and it stayed that way all day Monday.

Monday 28th

Ten cars turned up for the day and it was the only time there were more hard tops than soft tops - six hard tops, four soft tops. We were nervous at first about the weather but it was totally different from the day before; it was sunny, warm and clear. More cars turned out, we had tables, flags, kettles out, the traders were smiling loads of people came to see the cars some even took an interest in the Triumph Vitesse (well I never said they were all sane.

Sandra did her David Bailey bit and took some photos and things were going really well. Then! as if we really needed a laugh, Wayne had to prove he was no Jamie Oliver. He lit his cooker with the top ring on upside down and melted the plastic on the front of the cooker. He was really lucky as there was a rubber pipe that carried the gas to the ring - it could have exploded. It's a good job his wife comes with him most of the time to show him how to boil water.

Keith had his tape out to measure how much room ten cars took up for our own show. We also went for a visit to the first aid tent and I am pleased to say that they had no customers that day. Tony and Angela were sitting away from us but soon moved up so we could all have a natter. After we had collected our attendance gongs we set off home and in our usual style split up and lost each other, as we had to take a detour because of the closed road.
